MEC Conducts A Hectic 'Re Bona Ka Matlho' Visits To The Departmental Infrastructure Expenditure Projects - Is Satisfied With The Progress, So Far, Albeit Challenges



Thursday the 05th and Friday 06th September 2019, respectively, MEC Lehari held scheduled 'Re Bona Ka Matlho' visits to departmental infrastructure expenditure projects.

The hectic started with a visit to both Pilanesberg and then Mafikeng Airport the following day. The MEC met with the airport management, airport security and departmental personnel as well as SAPS and Customs officials manning the airports, especially Pilanesberg.

MEC Lehari undertook these exercise precisely to afford himself a chance see how far the projects are to completion and whether indeed work is being done. Through this social call, he wanted to assess whether there is a need to consider alternative options and intervention in case there are challenges encountered, as it were.

Rightfully so, MEC Lehari had an opportunity to see for himself the dire need for renovations at both the Pilanesberg and G D Montshioa Airport, formerly known as the Mafikeng Airport. With over R36 Million budgeted for the renovations for 2019/20 financial year and the pace of starting renovations stifled by internal processes, the MEC committed to causing the department to hasten the implementation of these infrastructure expenditure projects so that the deadlines and implementations are not compromised.

At Mogwase and Itsoseng DLTC's it has become apparent that the challenges experienced there need urgent attention. The structures are old abandoned building that need a lot of attention, to say the least.

The department has however, previously been able to renovate such buildings and put them back to working and habitable places.

''Whilst what I see is not pleasing to sight, I am nevertheless confident that the department has the capacity to ensure that these buildings are put back to good conducive law enforcement centres. We need more driver licensing and testing centres in our localities. All that these structures needs is optimism and confidence that we can still pull it in 201920, no doubt.

Meanwhile the MEC walk-about at the Lichtenburg Weighbridge gave him an opportunity to be to appraised of the development, appreciate the work of this law enforcement building as well as note the challenges encountered there and cause the department to fastrack resolution of outstanding construction.

Relevant Chief Director and or Directors had accompanied MEC Lehari as such to their respective projects.

These kind of visits also served to mark the end of a hectic 1st 100 days of MEC Lehari work in the Department of Community safety and Transport Management in the North West Province.

The MEC has thrice led the departmental team to a meeting with Premier's Office and Provincial Treasury jointly and severally where at progress in terms of these five (5) Infrastructure Expenditure projects is expected to be tabled.
